A SCHOOL COUNSELOR IS...
  • A master's level trained professional who confidentially helps students with their personal, social, and academic concerns.
  • Provides developmental, preventive and remedial services to all students, parents and teachers with the intent of helping people reach their fullest potential.
THE COUNSELING PROGRAM...
at Rugby Middle School allows the counselors to spend most of their time providing direct services to students through...

        Individual Counseling
  • A private and personal meeting with a counselor providing maximum privacy to explore ideas, feelings and behavior.
        Group Counseling
  • A small group of students (5-8) meeting confidentially with a school counselor to explore similar concerns. Group members share ideas, give and receive feedback, increase their awareness, practice skills and think about their goals and actions. Examples of topics include grief, changing families, friendship, and social skills.
        Classroom Guidance
  • Classroom lessons facilitated by counselors that address particular developmental issues or areas of concern. Topics may include: Bullying, self-esteem, conflict resolution, career development, and character education.
        Consultation
  • Counselors work with parents to provide information on growth and development, discuss their child's progress in school, discuss resources for the student and family, and offer support and encouragement.
  • Counselors work with school staff to help coordinate guidance activities, interpret student assessments, and create a positive learning environment.
        Coordination
  • The school counselor coordinates services that benefit students. Examples of counselor coordinated activities include Kids of Character, Ambassadors, and 8th Grade Mentoring Program.
